Simplex Objects: Relics of Future Past - Justin Parr
Simplex Objects: Relics of Future Past - Justin Parr
In geometry, a simplex is a generalization of the notion of a triangle or tetrahedron to arbitrary dimensions. In these works Justin is exploring a series of Simplex Objects made from solid rods of glass, sometimes incorporating charged neon gas and other glass based work in his experiments for the viewer.

Artists: Angeles Salinas, Braulio Ivan Gutierrez Gonzales, Crystal Harmon, Ian Manseau, and Sara Joy Lewis
To celebrate June’s Second Saturday Dock Space Gallery is showcasing five emerging San Antonio artists. The collection addresses courageous movement through challenges. Each artist makes work that addresses fractures or flaws in individuals, society, or nature. Angeles Salinas examines faith, displacement, belonging, existence, and acceptance of the human condition. Braulio Ivan Gutierrez Gonzales makes interactive pieces focused on analytical and emotional unraveling as he disentangles life’s problems. Crystal Harmon explores emotional tension with geometric shapes and colors, representing flaws in human nature. Ian Manseau’s sculptures from salvaged trees invite viewers to contemplate our interconnectedness and foster a deeper respect for nature. Sarah Joy Lewis paints landscapes and portraits with an emphasis on introspection and stillness.

Raices y Alas - AJ Rodriguez and the Annex features works by Rachael Duke, Braulio Gutierrez, and Donovan Martinez.
The Gallery features Raíces y Alas by local artist AJ Rodriguez. Translating to “Roots and Wings,” Rodriguez’ work explores the role of parents as a lifelong shelter and launchpad for their children. Growing up, Rodriguez spent time at a caretaker’s house while his father went to work at Kelly Air Force Base. Here Rodriguez’ older cousin taught him to create paper model sculptures, which he revisits now as a symbol of flight and the ability to return. Images of San Antonio’s ice houses represent “home” and form the backdrop for paper model airplanes. Combined these form a collection that is nostalgic, dynamic, tactile, and distinctly San Antonio.

Dock Space Annex's December show features artwork from Rachael Duke, Braulio Gutierrez, and Donovan Martinez. Duke is a sculptor and self-described “artivist,” creating art focused on current social issues. Inspired by Bett Butler’s poem “Disinvitation to the Dance,” Duke comments on the disenfranchisement of women voters. Donovan Martinez's creative process revolves around the inherent challenges of his chosen mediums, including wood, steel, and cement. These challenges yield moments of calm and clarity which are ultimately reflected in his final artworks. Braulio Ivan Gutierrez Gonzales calls his style of work ‘Conceptual Deconstruction’ and makes interactive works out of a variety of materials. These works are a representation of some trials he’s had and how he overcame those and created works out of them.
