Artist Statement
Fringes of society,
Unraveling,
Existing out of the norm.
Between two worlds,
Borders…
This exhibit is a reflection of where I am today, physically and metaphorically. The Valley is the Fringe, we are isolated and living between two nations, two cultures, and as a result of this overlap, we become “other.” It is in this overlap that I find inspiration.
By choosing to be a full time artist, I have elected to live on the fringe, rejecting the standard notions and preferring to live in a world of exploration, observation, creation, and self-reliance.
Fringe also means discovery for me, the idea of being in uncharted waters - place of experimentation and wonderment. It’s a place of innovation and creative force.

November 2016 - John Webb - "Prospect and Refuge"
Artist Statement - The sculptures exhibited in this show were chosen from a number of different series of works. However a fundamental idea unifies them: inventive spaces are conceived which draw on my background as a practicing and educating architect. Each piece begins with a generating idea which relates to considering the normally utilitarian application of plywood and employing it as a sculptural material.
Bio - John Webb’s education includes a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Art from the University of Bridgeport. He received a Masters of Architecture degree from U.C.L.A. and a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art with an emphasis in Sculpture from U.T.S.A. John is a sculptor, as well as a licensed, practicing architect. He is a member of the faculty of the College of Architecture at U.T.S.A.
